Reading Note 2

Ethics

1 the insterests of the informant come before al other considerations. you are a guest on the scene. you have no rights  vis-à-vis the informants' rights.

2 anthropologists do not misrepresent themselves to informants, and they never hide either their identities or their intentions. our relation to our imformants is that of students to teachers.

Alice Reich: Anthropology as Oxymoron

"The crucial awareness of ourselves and of all humans as culture makers as well as culture bearers is the strongest message anthropology has to offer in a liberal education. To be human is to hae a voice that names the world in relation to one's own experience. To be human is to seize the right to one's own voice and to work for the rights of everyone to a voice.

The oxymorons, the contradictions, which we can embrace and by which we can be embraced, then, include:

participant observation

the subject object

the strange familiar and the familiar strange

the unicersal specificity of humankind

culture/ourselves as creation and as created

有早知无乞儿

"The classic undergraduate last-minute attack and all-nighter writing are less likely to succeed with the big ethnography than with almost any other assignment you can think of."
